Conservation on Fire

Climate Change. We’ve muddled through a lot of things on this planet. Global Warming is one of the few things we could reverse and correct. Yet many people still believe it’s all made up in the minds of lonely scientists who want some publicity. In spite of rising oceans. In spite of increased wildfires. In spite of super hurricanes. In spite of any evidence you can present to them. And sadly, this may lead to the extinction of the human race. One generation or so after mind, they will see the end of this planet being able to sustain human life.

Water, Heat, and Food

You need to know the signs of heat stress and heat stroke in birds. I looked around the room and saw all my parrots with their wings out. No one was resorting to gular flapping, a means of panting in birds, but I want to keep them from that stage. Canary Year

I’m not breeding canaries for shows or competitions. I will gladly rehome them and be happy to have a good home for them. But I may be selling them to a person who has show canaries, and who has a yearly cycle based on the canary breeding schedule. Fall in Love with Lorikeets

I live very close to the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, formerly the Wild Animal Park and most residents still call it that. Anyway, I’ve been lucky enough to go there as often as I can, and makes having a yearly pass super fun. I got to see the Lorikeet Landing when it first opened. These beautiful rainbow birds are no respecters of clothing or fingers. They swoop to the first person they see holding out a plastic cup of nectar. When the cup is empty, sometimes the holder will get a little nip and randomly get a bird flying overhead while relieving itself. More fun than most people have in a day. Daily Smiles

In my house and yard, it’s very easy to find a reason to smile. By 9 AM the canaries are singing their sweet songs and teaching the youngsters how it’s done. I waited forever for my Fife hen, Thelma Lou, to successfully lay a clutch, sit on the eggs until they hatched, and feed the chicks until they fledged. She did it, and now she wants to keep going. But this is not the time of year for canaries to be hatching. I hope she knows I am proud of her, even when I pull out those eggs that she just laid. Continue reading “Daily Smiles”
