If they wanted to, Billionaires could save the world. Some are making the attempt by purchasing acres of the rainforest in Brazil and not allowing that land to be changed in any way. There does need to be another component to replace whatever the forest means to the native peoples. If they were parrot poachers, then make them guardians of a captive breeding population. Make them guides for eco-tourism. Make keeping the forest and animals safe part of their livelihood.

Becoming a Rescue
For many years now, I have taken in special needs birds and learned how to give them a good life. I have rehomed many “unwanted” parrots so that they went to people who were willing to provide for them and love them. I have adopted birds from the humane society that I didn’t think anyone else would want. I have done this out of the goodness of my heart and the ability of my life. I had a patron at one time who sent regular checks while my husband was unemployed, but for the most part I have managed with what I had.

As with most humans, my day is run by the hours of the day. I get up at the same time every day, I eat lunch at the same time, I go out to care for my aviary birds at the same time every day. In some ways, my parrots have adjusted to my schedule. But in other ways, they have their own time frames. Especially Maynard, who is obviously the center of the universe.

Okay. I have to start at the beginning. Of this breeding season, not forever. I lost my beautiful silver male button quail, Scooter, at the end of 2020. Probably due to a rat. His mate, Gem, was sitting on eggs. Two hatched and I pulled them in for brooder time. I have a male and a female, and the male, Sterling, is another beautiful silver. His sister, Lace, is a normal hen, but she does carry that silver gene.
