No More Button Quail

My darling husband mentioned recently that he would like to see me give up the button quail, as they stress me out more than any other of the birds. It’s true, since the cages in which I keep them are not designed to keep the chicks in when they hatch, I spend time looking for them, rounding them up, setting up brooders, showing each one where the food and water is, and eventually letting them go when I rehome them. But I can’t imagine not having a few tiny quail around.

Remembering Kai

Many years ago, a bird lady with whom I worked asked me if I would like another cockatiel. She had just inherited the bird from another friend, and the story was this. The very beautiful white faced gray cockatiel had been purchased for the son of the second woman, and he loved the bird as much as a young boy can loved an animal. They were bonded and spent a lot of time together.

Bird Food

No doubt I have lamented here often enough about how hard it is for me to provide chop or other fresh bird food to my flock. Periodically I can toss Romaine lettuce to the outside birds, and I forage grass seeds and fruits from my yard. Lately I have watered plants with the water from a splash dish in which seeds were deposited, and find plants growing that the birds love. I have to harvest those before the wild birds come through.
